4 Strategies for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

Losing weight and getting in shape are two of the most popular resolutions people make every year. Whether it’s motivated by holiday weight gain or a “New Year, New You” mentality, these are great choices for improving your overall health. However, studies show that, on average, many Americans lose their stride and give up their resolutions by the third week of January. To avoid this, we’re sharing some strategies from our nutrition coach’s arsenal to help you stay on track with health and wellness goals in 2023.

1. Choose Reasonable Goals That You Can Tailor

Instead of choosing a broad goal like “lose weight” or one that’s too extreme, design smaller action steps that will lead you to your ultimate goal. Your “resolutions” or goals can be small, actionable objectives that you build on over time. Make it about creating new healthy habits over the long term rather than quitting something that will feel extreme and difficult for you. The point is to set yourself up for success!

2. Set a Realistic Exercise Routine

If you haven’t worked out in a year, don’t set a goal of working out 6 days a week for two hours a day—that isn’t realistic and you will be tempted to give up very quickly because it’s such an extreme change. Instead, start with achievable steps, like committing to walking every other day for 30-45 minutes or starting a new exercise class a few times a week. Once you’ve had a few weeks of success, you can increase your efforts. PRO TIP: Schedule physical activity in your calendar like appointments—and treat them like ones you can’t miss!

3. Find Support

Find a way to support your goals that is realistic and fits into your lifestyle. If it’s community you crave, join a class, group or forum, all of which are excellent ways to give and receive support. If you prefer a more low-key avenue, recruit a friend to be an exercise partner or accountability buddy. Another excellent approach is to hire a weight loss specialist or nutrition coach to expertly guide and support you through your health and weight loss journey.

4. Adopt an Accountability Modality

It can be difficult to stay on track without a way to keep yourself accountable. While choosing an avenue of support like those mentioned above is a good step towards accountability, there are plenty of ways to complement that effort. Recording progress is a great way to stay motivated. It can be as simple as keeping a food diary or fitness journal that tracks your diet and/or physical activity. Another option is to get a Fitbit, smartwatch or one of the many tracking apps available on your electronic devices. Choose whatever method is going to be the most easy, convenient and enjoyable for you. If you choose to journal, take the opportunity to record your meals and activity, but also how your body feels as a result of your efforts. This will help you track your progress over time and inspire you when you’re feeling unmotivated.
